Capacity Building for Conservation: Coastal Forest Reserve, Tanzania
Capacity Building for Conservation: Practical lessons for primary school pupils adjacent to the Ruvu-South Coastal Forest Reserve, Tanzania
Project organizer: Dorah Mbogo
The project was to integrate the schools community adjacent to the Ruvu-South Coastal Forest Reserve to become an integral part of the forest conservation efforts. Major outcomes of the projects are that 15 teachers have been empowered and motivated in participatory teaching and learning approaches addressing sustainability issues relating to the Ruvu Forest Reserve, both practically and academically. 179 pupils from two primary schools have been trained in appropriate conservation skills, such as plant recognition, seed growing, tree planting and weed removal. Through these efforts, the schools community has become integral to the forest conservation, benefiting about 12,000 ha of the forest reserve, particularly in the forest edge and buffer zones.
